The story of Jericho James and his horse, Lucky is about a man who left his hometown of, Parkersburg, West Virginia in search of wealth and stability. Jericho set his plans on California and the gold fields, or whatever takes his fancy. The year is 1916. Jericho is telling his grandchildren of his life in 1876 when he was 24 years old. Jericho, at the time of his telling, is 65 years old. It is also a story inside a story.

While Jericho is telling his story to his grandchildren, they interrupt the story to ask questions, or make a comment of what they just heard. The story jumps back and forth from their present day of 1916 to 1876 in Jericho’s story telling. The Jericho James saga is a four book series. I slowly pull my .54 caliber, percussion cap, Hawken rifle from the leather scabbard hanging on the right side of my saddle. A quick glance to the cap, it’s set tight. Take two steps in front of my ground hitched horse. The movements of the tail are slowing. Has the cougar seen me? Or is he simply waiting on the unsuspecting calf?
Seating the butt into the pocket of my shoulder, I make out the body in the grass. Looking for a head or a shoulder. He’s taken a small step ahead. The shoulder is exposed. Sounds of the cattle fade. Pulling back the hammer, then waiting…now. As the cat is taking a step, the shoulder is clear of the grass and all obstructions. Pulling the trigger. The cap explodes, quickly igniting the black powder charge. The familiar push back to the shoulder. I hear a buzzing in my ears after the thunder of the shot. Shorty was wounded and had lost more than a dab of blood. He was slouched over in his saddle as he rode into Holbrook, Arizona. In front of him tied to their saddles were the Collins brothers. He slid from the saddle in front of the sheriff’s office. Tying Dunnie he told Jody and Jim to get down. ‘Can’t, we’re tied to the saddle horn.”
Shorty didn’t untie the ropes, just cut them with his knife. They dismounted and walked inside. A deputy jumped to his feet. “What’er you doing’ with Jody an’ Jim?”
“Where’s the sheriff?”
“Gone over to Page.”
“I’m lockin’ these fellers up for a spell.”
“Yer in the wrong town Master. This is Frank Collins’ town an’ them are his sons.”
“Are you gonna help er get in the way?”
“Only help I’ll give is get you the doctor, if you don’t pass out first.” Out the door he ran as Shorty locked the boys up and sat down behind the desk.

“Colonel Samford, please advise President Houston that they’re ready,” Dreka said to the three men who had been playing cards.
The three men stood up and walked over to the stairs. Colonel Charley Samford nodded to Dreka and headed up the steps as the other two incognito soldiers stood guard below. A few moments later, Sam Houston followed the Colonel and Billy back downstairs.

The novel of 50,000 words begins with the first line.

With apologies to Lao Tzu, writing a book is a journey, and at some point, you have to start. For most of us, staring at that blank page, or that blank screen, with not a word written, can be daunting, even overwhelming.

Fight that feeling, and start writing!

We have plenty to discuss still, even additional things you can do before you actually start writing. But let’s not wait. Let’s write that first line.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…

Call me Ishmael.

It was a dark and stormy night; 

All this happened, more or less.

It was love at first sight.

It is easy to argue, and difficult to debate, that the most important line of any story or any book, is the first one. You have a golden opportunity to grab the reader, to pull them into the second line, and the third…

You also have an opportunity lose them. Most readers will give you more than a single line to grab their attention, but there’s no reason to risk it.

Now, that being said, let’s not overthink the first line. The great thing about writing is that you can go back and change it. As you progress with your book, you may discover a better first line, or five different better first lines. That’s the fun of editing, the joy of discovering.

But you’ve got to put that first line down on paper. Take that first step.

If you haven’t done it. If you’ve found a thousand things to do instead of doing it. If it scares you death. Stop. Stop right now, sit down and write the first line of your book. And when you’re done, savor it, enjoy it — and get to work on the second line.

Jim, what was the driving force behind writing this new novel?

My dad was in law enforcement as I was growing up, and I was taught very early in life to love and respect those who wore badges and risked their lives to keep us safe. In this past year, as a Christian pastor, I felt the need to remind us from the Bible that the Lord has ordained the laws of the land and has raised up men and women who will enforce those laws for the good of humanity. Without law and order, there would be utter chaos.

Therefore, I have written a Western tribute to all of our men and women who wear the badge, whether law enforcers, military service men and women, or other first responders. They are the true heroes of our nation, often putting their lives on the line to protect ours.

Scriptures that motivated me to write this novel:

Romans 13:1-6 (NIV)
1  Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
2  Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
3  For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you.
4  For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.
5  Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience.
6  This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.

What was your first experience with those who work to keep the public safe?

My most vivid recollection was at the age of 16, immediately after a car wreck in which I was involved. The deputies were there to direct people safely around the wrecked cars, and the paramedics made sure I was okay. As a pastor, I have been on the scene of a lot of wrecks and I’ve seen first hand the amazing work of these first responders. These special people are game changers and life savers.

Why did you feel it was important to pay tribute to those working to keep us safe, and healthy?

The environment we live in today was one of the motivators for the novel. I believe being a first responder in the 21st century is a daunting task, and therefore, they need our encouragement and gratitude. I also want to encourage the next generation to consider answering the call to serve in these capacities.

How did you want to portray these important people in “The Bible and the Badge”?

As the heroes they are. They have a personal calling upon their lives and it requires tremendous, commitment from not only them, but their families.

Where did that inspiring title come from?

It was inspired by the direct link that exists between peace officers’ duty and sacred call. Thus, “The Bible and the Badge” seemed very appropriate and catchy.

How do you feel about the success you’ve been having lately with your Westerns?

I am blown away and very grateful to the Lord for the desire and ability to write. The thought that people would want to read what I write is exciting. Also, to be able to move people’s emotions by a short story or novel is pretty fantastic.

What are you currently working on?

Currently, I am working on four other Western novels. Two of them will be additional installments in my Caller’s Springs Series. The other will take me in a little different direction. The fourth will be a new endeavour for me: to write my first romance novel.

Can you share a prayer with our readers for the lawmen of America?

Heavenly Father, thank you for the men and women you have raised up across our nation who serve under your authority as peace officers. I pray for their daily safety. Surround them with your protection and give them joy in their service to You and their communities. I also pray for the families of officers and soldiers, as we know they are often burdened with knowing their loved ones are in hostile surroundings.  In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Why Now, Now, NOW! Is The Right Time To Believe In Your Western Novel

What a tremendous year so far! With great success seemingly around every bend in the road, there’s a great feeling of optimism in the Western book business. A whole genre that was pronounced dead a few years ago—a genre that has currently found itself in a state of rebirth with brand new books, brand new movies, brand new ideas—heck, a brand new lease of life. That life has allowed readers around the world to discover the wonder and awe of the history of the United States of America.

Take an author like Cherokee Parks. Cherokee, one of the finest Western writers of today, has been having one helluva year. With millions of pages of his Westerns read, he has been at the forefront of this rebirth. Authors like Robert Hanlon, GP Hutchinson, Randall Dale, David Watts, Mike Hundley, Paul L. Thompson, Scott Harris, C. Wayne Winkle, M. Allen, Mark Baugher, D.L. Bittick, and a shed load more have been leading this spearhead of achievement.

But what has made this rebirth possible?

REBLOG: How To Write A Bestseller With Western Writer Scott Harris: Mile 8: First Or Third?

One of the early questions you have to answer, even before you start writing, is if you’ll be writing in first person or third person. This is known as the point of view (POV). Each offers advantages and disadvantages.

First person POV is “I” based. Everything you share with the reader comes through the point of view of the “I” character, the first-person narrator.

I was enjoying the conversation. My nerves were on edge. We were running late.

For many, it is easy to write, because it is how we think. You pick a character, usually the protagonist, and tell the story through their eyes, actions and thoughts. You are then (by convention) restricted from entering the minds of other characters, and the character you pick must almost always be present to move the story forward. A first person POV lends itself more to intimacy with the reader through the main character. It also gives you an opportunity to create a unique voice, which can be fun for all writers, and maybe especially fun for new ones.

Third person POV lets us watch and listen through an independent narrator, and instead of “I” or “we,” it is “she,” “they” or “them.”

They were enjoying the conversation. Everyone’s nerves were on edge. She was going to be late.

This POV allows you the luxury of moving quickly and easily between scenes and characters, keeping the story fresh, and gives you many opportunities to move the story forward. But, unless it is done well, it can be confusing to the reader. Your narrator needs to have a distinctive voice.

For my Brock Clemons series, I picked a hybrid. When Brock is the focus, which is about 75 percent of the time, I use first person and Brock is the one who thinks and speaks. However, for the balance of the chapters, I switch to a third person POV and have the narrator hover above other characters, usually without Brock being present. I like how it gives the reader (and the writer) a little break from Brock’s point of view.

I have been warned against this, because the transition between the two POVs can be challenging, and if not done well, is a quicker way to lose readers than even boring or poor writing.

I think it works — at least for me — and I enjoy it. However, it’s not for everyone. I suggest you try both styles for a few pages and see which is most natural and comfortable for you.

To outline, or not to outline, that is the question:

Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer

The slings and arrows of an unplanned novel

Or to take arms against a sea of troubles

By outlining them and so ending them

Forgive me, but that was fun to write.

Many, perhaps even most, writing experts (regardless of genre) will tell you the most critical part of any novel is the outline. They are absolutely correct.

Others, albeit a minority, will tell you that an outline is unnecessary, a constraint on creativity and the storyline, and it is better to march boldly into the unknown, chapter by unplanned chapter. They are also absolutely correct.

Whichever way you to decide to go, simply make sure it is absolutely correct for you. If an outline is not restrictive, but rather provides direction and guidance, a sense of form and comfort as you tackle your novel, and then allows you the freedom of exploring each predetermined chapter, that’s exactly what you should do.

If, instead, as I did with my first three novels — “Coyote Courage,” “Coyote Creek” and “Coyote Canyon” (I love alliteration, sometimes to a fault) — you prefer tackling each chapter as it comes and only discovering what comes next as you’re writing it, then that’s how you should approach your writing.

Perhaps you prefer to know what the final chapter will be before you begin and write your way toward it. I did this with one of my books (“Coyote Canyon”), and I found the experience exhilarating, though at times a bit restrictive.

Again, the key, as it always is when writing, is to find what works best for you. You may know the right method already, or you may need to experiment with a variety of approaches before determining which one best fits your style. Beware those who tell you there is only one to write a novel — they’re wrong.

As I said, my first three fiction Westerns were written without a net. Not only did I not have an outline, but I also did not know from chapter to chapter what was going to happen next. The process worked well, for me. And yet, with my most recent book, the fourth in the Brock Clemons series, “Battle on the Plateau,” I tried doing an outline. I wanted to test and compare the two starkly different styles and, so far, have found developing an outline to be both challenging and rewarding. It worked, at least for me, but only because I used it as a guideline and didn’t feel constrained to stick to it as it was originally written.

In the end, do what works for you, recognizing that it may change over time.

When — and why — did you first fall in love with Westerns?

About a year ago my publicist, Nick Wale, recommended I give writing a Western series a go. Six novels later, and I love writing my “Sutton Brothers Series.” I like the freedom that comes with writing great adventures with lots of action and suspense.

Who are your three favorite Western writers?

I am a big fan of Sarah McCarty’s Western novels. I find I can barrel through them in one day. I also enjoy reading Paul Thompson and Erin Nicholas.

Which Western do you wish you’d written?

“Lonesome Dove.” Not only is it a true, bonafide classic, but it’s also a novel that has found an audience outside of the Western market—and it’s important that Westerns find a wider audience to promote the history of the Old West.

What is the most recent Western you’ve read?

Recently, I read the Sarah McCarty novel “Sam’s Creed.” I enjoyed it very much. I loved the blend of action, adventure and plot twists.

“The Virginian” – Owen Wister

“Lonesome Dove” – Larry McMurtry

“True Grit” – Charles Portis

What are your three favorite Western movies?

“The Cowboy” – Jack Lemmon

“Django Unchained” – Jamie Foxx

Of the books you’ve written, which is your favorite — and why?

My latest novel “Jackson Sutton: An Assassin to Kill For” is my favorite Western novel that I’ve written so far. It is the longest of the Sutton brothers collection and had the most action and adventure.

What is the most recent Western you’ve written?

“Jackson Sutton” will be out later this month, and I can’t wait to share it with you all.

Can you tell us anything about your next book?

Well, important information first. “Jackson Sutton” is coming out later this month! What’s it about? Jackson Sutton and his unreachable love, Hannah Baldwin. Jackson is the sixth brother in the Sutton series and is the one brother who has wandered farthest from home seeking his own fortune. When he enlisted with the Eighth Circle, a secret society of assassins, he never expected to find the woman of his dreams working beside him.

Hannah Baldwin is the niece of Augustus Baldwin, a man who specializes in secrets and lies. When they find the network of spies they’ve set up all through Europe is about to come crashing down because of a double agent, they turn to the one man who can keep them safe with hunting down the double agent and saving the Eighth Circle … Jackson Sutton.

If you could go back in time, what would be the time and place in the Old West you’d like to have lived in for a year?

I think it would be fun to live on a ranch back then. I feel that life was simpler and fuller at the same time. Where your connections were with the people around you and not things like phones or TVs. A time when you got what you wanted or needed by earning it with your own two hands. I could see how that could be very rewarding.
