Having been privileged to sell Westerns for years, and having been the driving force behind bestselling series, number one sellers and all manner of wonderful things, I have had the unique opportunity to see, up front, the way authors react to the promotion of books. You see, friend, there are two kinds of authors. There are the golden goose buyers and the golden egg buyers, and both behave very differently and have very different kinds of successes.
See, if you sat down and spoke to ten different authors and
showed them a golden goose and a golden egg side by side—they’d all agree
unanimously that the golden goose is the better investment. Why, that goose
could go on laying eggs for years! But when they’re not faced with that clear comparison,
the majority of people buy the eggs and neglect the goose. Why? Well, I think
it comes down to a lack of understanding. When faced with the idea of investing
in the goose, they will say no in favor of buying homes, stoves, vacations,
cars—all manner of things they want to have and should have—but let me ask you
this: Is it worth investing exclusively in the eggs at the expense of the
goose?
Now, with the goose in mind, let’s talk about an email I
received this morning from one of the most consistent sellers on the market. I’ll
read it to you.
“I have to say, I never doubted the effectiveness of the
formula and have utilized it since day one! Nick, you’re a marketing genius,
and I will ALWAYS bless the day I signed on to the formula, and with you as my
publicist!”
Nice note, eh? This gentleman is called Cherokee Parks and he currently has three books inside the top twenty. Now, Cherokee, I’m sure he likes the golden eggs and enjoys the things the eggs can do for him, but he also takes care of the goose. His goose is so plump and rich, it keeps providing those golden eggs month, after month, after month; and without a doubt, his eggs are getting richer as he goes along.
His latest series has been a startling success. He has just completed one of the most successful months of his career, and he has a new Western on the way. With Cherokee, the formula has dictated his sales success. You remember we discussed the formula last time we spoke? You see, we knew the products would be excellent, so we released them in quick succession and used a mixture of advertising, inter-book promotion, SEO and understanding buyer habits and market flow. In essence, he created a series of products readers would find intriguing, and then we did what was needed to get them seen by readers and make sure the reader had no cause to say no. The result? All three books in the series currently sit inside the top twenty bestseller list on Amazon. But how did he know how to invest in the goose?
Can you see how the formula would help sell your Western stories to readers?
After a discussion, Cherokee knew he could work to the
formula. He was already devising the series that would break him through. That
series began two or three years ago and since then he has created series after
series—and hit after hit. Yes, the formula was something he knew would work for
him.
Are you interested in selling Westerns?
Cherokee knew that he wanted to be read and being read means
selling Westerns. I believe his interest was great—so this would be a loud, awe-inspiring
YES.
When do you think you ought to start selling Westerns?
Well, for Cherokee, he knew he wanted to do it straight
away. No time like the present. He’s a go-getter and the best thing about being
a go-getter is that there is nothing like the present to make a success of your
books. Since we started working together with the formula, he hasn’t had a day
where he hasn’t sold Westerns. The question for Cherokee now is should he stop?
I’m sure we would get a NO!
And how about you? Do you think you’d like to try the formula? How do these questions look when you answer them? Remember this, friend, it takes a lot longer to build a school than it does to build a wood hut—but the right blueprint can save you a lot of time.
Now, if you have any questions or ideas you would like to discuss, my door is always open. Like a hawk, I’m always around plotting the next promotional step, watching the bestseller chart, tweaking ads and putting together new ideas. Just send me a note and let’s brainstorm together. Either way, the opportunity to succeed is yours.
When the formula for success was first rolled out last year, one of the first people who wanted to try it was Fred Staff. Fred, who had been successful before, wanted that success again. His drive was immense and once he learned about the formula, he threw himself into it.
With Fred, we knew the product would be everything, so we devised a new commercial Western series that would propel him forward. This series was called “Will Thomas: Mountain Man,” and he wrote the three books quickly. Then we released them in quick succession and used a mixture of advertising, inter-book promotion, SEO and understanding buyer habits and market flow. In essence, we created a series of products readers would find intriguing and then we did what was needed to get them seen by readers, and make sure the reader had no cause to say no. The result? All three books in the series currently sit inside the top fifty bestseller list on Amazon. The first steps for the formula we put into practice are quite simple. Let’s take a look at them…
Can you see how the formula would help sell your Western stories to readers?
Why, yes. Fred could. After discussing and learning about
the formula and the algorithm, he knew it was something he could work with.
Sure beats not selling any books, right?
Are you interested in selling Westerns?
Why, yes. He was. He loved readers, but he wanted more of
them. Selling books is the yardstick of having readers. Fred wanted more
readers and that drove him to stop what he was doing wrong, and to start
embracing something that was right.
When do you think you ought to start selling Westerns?
Well, for Fred… he figured he wanted to do it straight away. He did his part, I did mine, and what we ended up with was a successful series being enjoyed around the world. Some writers write for pleasure. Staff writes his Westerns with an eye towards having them read.
And how about you? Do you think you’d like to try the formula? How do these questions look when you answer them? Remember this, friend, it takes a lot longer to build a school than it does to build a wood hut—but the right blueprint can save you a lot of time.

Over the last few months, I have been writing these blog articles to encourage you—the daring writer—to take a chance on the promotion of your book(s) and try to find some new ways to sell that novel currently wasting away on those sales platforms. It occurred to me that book promotion of any kind is just a simple case of lateral thinking, and I wanted to share three of the ways I come up with successful strategies to sell the books I work on. These strategies can be applied to any genre, and any problem—and you may already be using them—but if you aren’t, buckle up. You are in for a great surprise.
Voice-to-Voice
For a really great way to sit back and dwell on a problem,
it may be worthwhile for you to record and play back the elements that make up
your problem, and the conclusion you would like to have. This has worked for me
many times. Usually, some detail appears that I have never considered before, or
some new idea comes to mind to sell the product. For example, it was this
technique that allowed me to engineer the strategy behind the three Gene Turney
Westerns currently sitting inside the top one hundred on Amazon. One small
detail I’d overlooked, once fixed, turned his books into a massive win on the
bestseller chart.
Mapping Your Mind
A visual aid can always come in handy. Once a map of your
problem has been drawn, you can plan a journey towards success. The elements
that make for a successful book are sitting in front of you—drawn, even. Now
you can individually see each moving part of the strategy and you can start
looking at suitable solutions, drawing a path to allow you to flourish. I would
highly recommend giving this a try. Many of the best Western sellers were
strategized using this technique.
Reverse Thinking
Sometimes we find ourselves so involved with the problem, we
actually find ourselves lost. I like to throw myself into visualizing the end
result. Keeping both the problem and desired end result in mind, I like to work
backwards from the desired result, toward the problem. This isn’t always
perfect, but by looking at what the authors who don’t sell are doing—you’ll
know what you don’t want, and this will eradicate many ideas in one fell
swoop.
Try these three techniques and see if they can help you break through the deadlock. Now, if you have any questions or ideas you would like to discuss, my door is always open. Like a hawk, I’m always around plotting the next promotional step, watching the bestseller chart, tweaking ads and putting together new ideas. Just send me a note and let’s brainstorm together. When we put the new Western selling formula into action, none of us, not even myself, realized the success we would see from the seeds we planted several months ago. This morning I received an email from an author, one who recently embraced the formula, and one who until recently had been struggling with gaining and maintaining success with his books. This email brightened up my day because it showed that he recognized the complete reversal in his fortunes. From books that were sitting, gathering dust and doing nothing, to the first glimmer of success to his current position—two books sitting on the bestseller chart making sales hourly and being read by joyfully by readers. Let me share this testimonial with you. It says more than I could ever hope to.
Nick,
I have written over thirty Westerns and been fortunate
that four have become bestsellers. It had never dawned on me that the four that
were bestsellers were in a series. You had told me that the series was the way
to write, but it never really sunk in. When you finally got my attention, and I
wrote the Will Thomas series (which has both books sitting in the top fifty), I
am hard at the third and have an outline for number four. If anyone wants to
discuss this approach, they can contact me on Facebook, and I’ll be glad to
discuss it. Your formula has changed my writing career for the better. I now
know the right length for each book, the right way to present my characters to
the selling audience, the way to use my book to please the selling algorithm,
the right style, and the right approach. Thank you.
Fred Staff
Author, Will Thomas: Mountain Man
Thank you, Fred. Thank you for your kind words. The formula has proven that it doesn’t matter how old an author is, or how unsuccessful, or how hard they’ve worked. It’s about the way they work, the way they put together Western novels, the way they position their Western novels, the way the Western is promoted. It is a formula that takes what has worked in the past for many authors and asks a current crop of bestsellers three questions:
Can you see how the formula would help sell your Western
stories to readers?
Why, yes. Fred could. After discussing and learning about the formula and the algorithm, he knew it was something he could work with. Sure beats not selling any books, right?
Are you interested in selling Westerns?

From the earliest days of selling Western novels online, we
know that every author has been struggling with one powerful problem. How do I
make my book sell? How do I get my Western seen by a reader? Thousands of readers?
Where are those readers? Did all my readers die? Is the Western dead?
After a year of unstoppable forward progress, I can safely report that the readership is alive and well. The reader today, as we start this God-given day, is currently tucking into one, two, three or four Westerns from authors you see every single day of the week—if you are paying attention to the bestseller charts. Right now, at this moment, a reader is tucking into “Jack Flint: Mountain Man” by William Joiner or “Trigger Finger” by Mike Mackessy. Right now, a reader may even be reading your book. You just don’t know—but when your sales climb, you can make a fair bet that it’s one of your books that reader is reading.
Let me ask you this question. What is your goal? Every
author has a goal. Is your goal to be read? To have a book that entertains
people? A book that is read around the world? Or is it money that floats your
boat? Are you looking to make money? Well, whatever your goal, I can tell you
that the opportunity already exists. The only question is your tapping into the
opportunity and making your goal come to life.
Now let me ask you this. Do you ever get up in the morning
and say to yourself, “What am I going to do today to make these sales happen?”
You do? Well, you are a creature of great imagination. You don’t? Let me take
you aside a minute and tell you this—if you get up a little earlier and get
your notepad, you can jot down five ideas for that day to increase your sales.
Yes, some of those ideas won’t work, and some you will disregard; but over a
year, you will have jotted down 1,825 ideas (if you work ideas on weekends as I
do) and out of those ideas, you only need one to work.
You see the opportunity already exists because you were
given the one thing that no other being on this earth has. You were given the
human brain, and that brain can solve any problem. You were given thought,
reasoning, and you were given the most beautiful gift anyone could have hoped
for.
And, you see, book promotion is all about attitude, and
cause and effect. Attitude is the word you should mull over when you read this
article. It is attitude that holds a lot of authors back, holds them to dated
ideas, holds them to negative thoughts about their work, or the lack of readers,
and let me tell you this—age means nothing. Negativity on any level when
dealing with promotion is the number one idea killer. Cause and effect have
proven that what you put in you will get back. Why not change your attitude if
you are a negative person? Pull that notepad towards yourself and start
brainstorming those ideas. Your reward in life will always be exact to your
contribution.
Remember this, friend, it takes a lot longer to build a
school than it does to build a wood hut—so keep at it.
And if you have any questions or ideas you would like to discuss, my door is always open. Like a hawk, I’m always around plotting the next promotional step, watching the bestseller chart, tweaking ads and putting together new ideas. Just send me a note and let’s brainstorm together. Either way, the opportunity to succeed is yours.
